What is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations used in schools and universities worldwide — one of the most academically powerful experiences available to young people.

The United Nations

The UN was founded in 1945 with 51 original member states. Today it has 193 members — nearly every country on Earth. Its mission: maintain international peace, protect human rights, deliver humanitarian aid, and promote sustainable development.

Assigned Country, Real Position

Each student is assigned a country and must represent that country's official position on a real global issue — regardless of their personal opinion. They research, write a formal position paper, debate with other delegates, and draft a resolution that countries vote on.

Why MUN is academically powerful?

MUN simultaneously develops skills that universities and employers rank as most sought-after — research, structured argumentation, persuasive writing, public speaking, active listening, negotiation, and the ability to build consensus across disagreement. Studies of MUN alumni show significantly higher rates of admission to top universities and entry into careers in law, diplomacy, journalism, policy, and international business.

What delegates will achieve

By the end of the 5-day programme, every delegate will have developed SEVEN core competencies — each with a real, measurable output.

Day by Day

Each day builds on the last — from country assignment and research to live debate, negotiation, voting, and a live crisis simulation.

Opening ceremony, country and committee assignments, MUN orientation, and a deep-dive research session. Delegates receive a library of resources and begin their Position Paper draft. Evening: the 'Country Fair' — delegates introduce their country without notes for 2 minutes.
Rules of Procedure workshop (points, motions, yielding). Speech structure masterclass: claim → evidence → impact. Timed practice, peer feedback, and opening speeches delivered to the full committee. Introduction to Working Papers.
Unmoderated caucus: delegates meet, negotiate, and form blocs. Working Paper drafting in groups, operative clause workshop, and first round of moderated debate. Guest speaker via video — a UN or foreign service professional.
Final Working Paper mergers, formal debate on merged draft resolutions, proposed amendments, and the full voting procedure. Resolution passes or fails. Post-vote debrief: what just happened, and why?
Mini crisis simulation: an unscripted breaking news event forces immediate committee response. Delegates must improvise new positions and apply everything learned without a script. Followed by awards, closing speeches, certificate ceremony, and reflection circle.

Learn from someone who was there

Dr Kamal Panchal

Executive Director, Asia Pacific MUN
Dr Panchal has represented countries at UN Headquarters in New York City and the United Nations Office in Geneva. He served as a youth representative in the China-India Youth Talks 2019 and was elected Vice-Chair of the India-Pakistan Scout Youth Forum in 2012. He holds the prestigious President Rover Scout Award (2011) and has worked extensively with the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award China and Boy Scouts programs across multiple countries.
Students at MFA-MUN are not learning from a textbook — they are learning from someone who has sat in the rooms where these decisions are made.
