Want to go to Tibet? Now’s the time to plan!

Image

Dreaming of Tibet? A little planning goes a long way. If you’re a foreign passport holder, you can’t simply book a train or flight to Lhasa and go.

There are a number of things to consider when planning a trip to Tibet.

☀️  The Season & The Climate

May – October is the main travel season, with more comfortable weather and easier access to many high-altitude destinations. November – April is the quieter season: it’s cold, but prices can be lower and you can still visit Everest Base Camp.

💡Tip: If you’re thinking about traveling during the October holiday, you should reach out to us now.

🎊 Local Tibetan Holiday Celebrations

Want to experience something extra special? Planning your trip around a Tibetan festival can add a fascinating cultural dimension to your journey. We’ve listed some below.

  • Feb – Losar (Tibetan New Year)
  • Feb – Monlam Chenmo (Great Prayer Festival)
  • Mar-Apr – Nyingchi Peach blossom festival
  • Mar – Butter lamp / Choe-nga Choepa
  • May – Saga Dawa
  • Jun –  Cham Dance Festivals in various monasteries
  • Jun – Thangka Festival in Tashilungpo Monastery
  • Jun – Zamling Chisang
  • July – Choekhor Düchen
  • End Jul – Gyantse horse race
  • Aug – Shoton (Yoghurt) Festival
  • Aug – Karma Dunba (Bathing Festival)
  • Varies – Labrang Monlam Festival
  • Nov – Lhabab Düchen
  • Nov – Palden Lhamo Festival
  • Dec – Ganden Nga-Choe

Festival dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar, so they change from year to year. These are references for 2026.

🛂 Permit Application & Travel Arrangements

As a foreign passport holder, you cannot travel around Tibet freely due to government restrictions. You’ll need to arrange your trip with a travel company, like us :), including the tour and regional entry permits.  Don’t leave this until the last minute. The absolute latest you can book is 3 weeks before departure to allow for processing.

🗓️  Visa Timing

Renewing your Chinese visa or residence permit? Plan carefully.

You cannot travel to Tibet or apply for the Tibet permit using only the paper/receipt issued by Exit-Entry while your passport is being processed. Make sure your passport and valid visa are ready before your Tibet permit application.

🩺 Talk to Your Doctor

Tibet is very close to the sky! This means less oxygen than you’re used to.

If you have existing health concerns, talk to your doctor about whether you’re fit for high-altitude travel.
