Shanghai trying to drown you? Here’s what to do on a rainy day.

Over the weekend, the streets turned into rivers. Your umbrella is very much gone with the wind. Your family or friends are in town, and they still want to have a good time.

It’s set to rain for the rest of this week, but don’t worry. Once the typhoon has calmed down a bit and safety alerts are removed, you can still have a great day in Shanghai, even in the rain.

Here’s what to do in Shanghai when the going gets wet.

1. Stop trying to walk everywhere

When the rain gets serious, swap a long walking tour for a few indoor stops. 

  • Pick one neighborhood
  • Use the Metro or a Didi between destinations
  • Save the outdoor sightseeing for when the rain lets up

2. Find somewhere good to hide

Explore thousands of years of Chinese art and history without getting soaked. The Museum has two locations: the Shanghai Museum East in Pudong and the one in People’s Square.

🎨 Power Station of Art

📚 Explore the historical ZiKaWei Library

Explore the city’s oldest library (founded in 1847), pick up a book, and let the rain do its thing outside.

3. Take some time off and chill in a cafe or have a slow meal

Hop into a local shop or grab a book and head to a cafe for: 

  • 🍜 A nice bowl of noodles 
  • 🥟 Xiaolongbao or shengjian
  • 🍵 A long, lazy tea or coffee break in the Former French Concession

4. If you have kids, head to the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum

5. And when the rain finally stops…

Go outside to take some great pictures.

Shanghai can look surprisingly beautiful after a downpour with the wet streets reflecting lights in a different way.

Sometimes the weather doesn’t ruin your day in Shanghai. It just changes the itinerary. ☔
